How can I develop my resiliency to grow, learn and contribute to a community?
This morning we used the book Seven Sacred Teachings for inspiration to do pastel wolf art on a black background. We started by drawing the wolf in pencil. Than we outlined in pastel and filled it in.
Some things we felt about our art:
Overall everyone was very proud of their artwork and we are excited to have it displayed in the hallway for everyone to see! We learned a really awesome new game in gym today. We felt that we had a green positive time with a little bit of yellow zone because it was exciting. Reasons why we felt green:
We are almost finished our wolf drawing. The next step is to add the tail. We also watched a video on how Wolves hunt Elk with their super strength sense of smell. It is 100 times stronger than humans! The Elk was smart though too because it went into water so the wolves couldn't get it! We worked on our writing by using a checklist to edit it. Some of the things we checked were for capitals, periods, and spelling. Some of us practiced typing up our work on the computer once we were done editing. In Math, we continued practicing estimating by looking at dots on the smartboard and sharing our thinking. We practiced drawing wolves by watching a video and talked about what humility means again using some examples that happen everyday. Like after winning a game shaking the other person's hand and saying good game is being humble instead of bragging about winning.
We had some quiet free time in the library because it was a blue cold day for the first time ever meaning we did not go outside! Today we changed some things about our Daily 5 routine. We have new literacy groups for the New Year and some students will be going to learn from Mrs.Lower across the hall, while students from her class will be coming to our class to do Daily 5. Our goal is for everyone to become a confident reader! Some of us are creating a story in a small group that we will present to the class when we are done. We are almost done building our buffalo!!! We attached the head and it is holding on! Math
We continued our Math center routine in the new year but with some new center options. The new puzzles were a hit along with connect 4 addition and dominos! The puzzles will help our visualization and fine motor skills. We will begin to work on simple addition of single digit numbers using dice, dominos and other counters to develop our number sense. Buffalo We made some repairs to our buffalo using duct tape which we have discovered is stronger and better for building than masking tape. We added wooden dowls to each leg to help make him stable. Our next step will be to attach the head we have made to the body than begin to brainstorm ideas for how to finish it! First Nations Legends & Wolves We are continuing to explore first nations legend. Today we started a story called the seven sacred teachings which is a story about 4 legged wild animals teaching 2 legged aka humans virtues to live by. The first virtue we discussed today taught by the wolf is humility. This was a challenging concept for us but we will talk more about what it means tomorrow and how wolves show humility in the way they live in a pack. Journal
We shared about our winter break and all the things we did in a sharing circle. Than we used our idea graphic organizer to draw 4 pictures about our ideas with our main idea of winter break in the middle. We added words to our pictures in order to express our ideas clearly. Tomorrow we will practice putting our ideas into sentences using our graphic organizer. We will focus on organizing our ideas into full sentences including capitals and periods. We will also begin to practice using our sight word wall and list to help us spell. Other highlights from our first day back: We started our new year with some just dance and go with the pro to celebrate someones birthday. At recess we built snowmen with the awesome sticky snow. We also created snow toys. Looking at the calendar, we looked at how it is the new year of 2018 and also watched a new mystery of the week about why it is called the month of January after the roman god Janus. |
