How can I develop my resiliency to grow, learn and contribute to a community?

We went to the gym this morning to sing different christmas songs. Some of our favorites are:
Santa Claus came to visit us in our gym. We liked that we got pancakes with whipped cream on them. We also liked the sausage and the BACON!!!!! The fruit was delicious. We watched the movie the Grinch that Stole Christmas. This was a morning that we will never forget!
THANK YOU TO ALL THE PARENT VOLUNTEERS WHO HELPED MAKE THIS MORNING SO SPECIAL!! Apologies for the delay in blog posts. We have had a busy week in Grade Two!
TOMORROW:
Today we had a visit from the Occupational Therapist Breanna. She talked about how our brains worked and the different parts to start. Some of us knew the parts including the stem and spine that attach!
She talked about thinking of the brain like a house. In the top of the house is a wise owl who keeps things under control. In the bottom is a dog who goes through different feelings like scared, happy, nervous or sad. Sometimes our dog also gets too excited and the wise owl flies away and we are not in control. Other times the wise owl checks in with the dog to see how things are going. Than she taught us different ways to calm our inner dog brain by doing different breathing excercises. One is called Lazy 8 breathing and laying on the ground with a rock on our bellies to see how our breath goes in and out. Can practice this strategy at home with the below diagram or ask the students to show you what tool they put in their tool box to help calm them down. When we did gonoodle today we were able to grow our monster squatchy berger.
We tried to build our buffalo today. The legs started to slip into the buffalo so we need to think of a way to fix. We also started to build the head of the buffalo by starting with a long skinny rectangle. Tool box in journal. We put different strategies in our tool box to help us stay in the green zone. We practice different strategies like hand pull, tree pose, wall sit, and bear hug. This is only some of them though there are more that we are going to practice. Ms.Breanna the Occupational Therapist is coming tomorrow to see us again! Journal
We watched a story called the snowmen at night. It was about what the snowmen do when they come to life at night time. The snowmen went sledding, skating, and drank ice cold chocolate. We than wrote about either what they were doing or something we wish the snowmen did. Some of the things we made up were that they drove a car with Frosty the snowmen, skateboarding, playing video games and surfing. Science We continued to test different materials. We discovered that cork floated really well. We also tested cardboard and at first it floated but than it started to slowly sink and get soggy. Science
We put on our scientist hat again today and this time explored the question of: what materials would make a god boat? To start we brainstormed some ideas to start. Than we tested different materials to see what would happen. We saw that some materials sunk like metal and others floated like wood, piece or carpet and plastic. We put in yellow mesh plastic material and it didnt sink or float it stayed in the middle. We still have more materials to test and than our next step will be to start designing a boat now that we have looked at what shapes and materials work. Estimation Station Jar. Each week a student will take home the jar and fill it with one object of their choice. When they bring it back after the weekend we will estimate how many are inside and write down our best guess. Today we practiced by looking at crayons Ms.Chilton had put inside. We had alot of different guesses and put them in order from smallest to biggest. We had 4 very close guesses and one that was the exact amount! We did talk about though that a guess does not have to exactly right but that if we practice we should be able to look, think and talk in order to make a guess that is close! PARENTS: Please check backpacks for the following:
We started watching the Muppet movie in the learning commons because we reached our reading stamina goal of reading for over 12 minutes straight 10 times!!!! Buffalo Update We are almost done our buffalo. For the legs we made a second set of legs and put one inside the other to make them stronger. We came up with a new plan to attach them by cutting holes in the bottom instead of just sticking them on with tape. We are testing out making a mini 3D head first in order to build the actual size one. We also had a small group working on the tail. Some people held the tail while others tapped it on. Science Today we talked about thinking like a scientist and the process that they go through. We wrote down a hypothesis, experimented and than drew in our visual journals what happened. To continue developing our knowledge of constructing 3D shapes and buoyancy we made clay boats. First we looked at different 3D shapes and made a guess (hypothesis) for which shape we thought would make the best boat. Once we did some testing with the clay and made sure our boat would float and be hollow (air inside). Than our third challenge was to see if it could hold different kinds of weight. Our conclusion was that the sphere cut in half made the best boat although there were some other shapes that were successful as well. Our next step will be to start thinking about different materials and test them to see if they repel or absorb water. |
