How can I develop my resiliency to grow, learn and contribute to a community?
Tomorrow we will be opening our time capusule! We went and got it from the basement which was super exciting! Parents reminder tomorrow is a regular full day of school! We also said farewell to the grade 6's and created our fur patches today. Tomorrow we will glue them onto the buffalo to finish him! We worked on the buffalo. We are starting to put fur on him. We also added our horns! We had a special guest artist. Her name is Mrs.Wismer. She is an educational assistant in our school! She showed us how to draw a robot but we did in a different way. We actually did it by drawing piece by piece upside down! The end results were awesome and it showed the boys willingness to take an artist risk! For Science we put oil in water to see what would happen. We also added different colored food coloring. The oil was floating on top of the water. We learned that oil and water are two liquids that don't mix!
We got extra recess and popsicles at the end of the day because we won the carnival basket competition! We worked on the buffalo. We started to draw our design for our own patch of fur! This morning we wrote a special journal that parent volunteers will see on Thursday when they come to the Volunteer which is Thursday afternoon 130-230!
This afternoon we did word work. We focused on similar sounds that are spelled differently. AI, A_E and AY words. We watched this video by Kids vs. Phonics which is a great resource to practice letter sounds: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ghd898RDjEM After we brainstormed words and continued to add to our word walls. This will be our focus for the remainder of the year! Science This morning we went with Ms.Palmer to do music. We practice playing Xylopohones. We learned a song with different notes such as G I C and A. Science This afternoon to boys were presented with something to observe. First we took a look at the bucket and talked about what we see/noticed/wondered about the bucket. Than we wrote it on a sticky. The next thing we did was we talked about if we would want to drink the water and why not. After we watched several videos about the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. This week we will be learning more about water (liquids) and performing some experiments. We will also think about small everyday ways that we can help our environment! The boys will be bringing home their Praying Mantis tomorrow. These are a specific type of Mantis that are allowed to be released in Alberta. They are a great addition to any suburban garden, back yard or park to help the plants stay protected from nasty pests and other things! The boys have been informed that they need to release their Mantis when they get home because they no longer have a provided food supply. The Mantis need to go back into their natural habitat so they can have a great summer feasting on all the other bugs! However we talked today about how they can continue to use their jars to catch (but also release) other bugs this summer!
We went to Mrs.Palmer for music. She taught us a french song called Au Claire de la Lune. We also watched a video to show how to use the instrument called an xylophone. The boys will be spending a couple more sessions with Ms.Palmer to learn more about music and this instrument!
Parents:
This morning we had a special guest come to teach the boys art. It was Gavin's grandma Jan! She did an amazing job taking the boys through each step of the project. We started with pencil so boys could sketch out what they wanted to do. Next the boys had a choice between acrylic paint, colored sharpie or both. Alot of the boys ended up mixing the two! Below you can see the process. Tomorrow these awesome quality pieces of art will be coming home with the boys! Science This afternoon the boys got to make their own mini Mantis habitats in jars. First we put dirt in the bottom than they got to put sticks they found outside, moss and a vine! Tomorrow we will be counting the Mantis to see if we have enough for each boy! We have been working hard to finish our big Buffalo friend. With the help of hot glue (supervised by an adult of course) the boys have been putting fabric onto the different parts. So far we have the head and legs done. Next we will start to cover the body! Once he is fully covered the boys will each get their own patch of fur to design that will also go onto him.
Tomorrow we will be visiting the library. It will be the last week that boys can sign books out.
Magnets This morning we experimented by going "fishing" with magnets. First we discussed how magnets work by sharing what we already knew about them. Than we watched a brief video about how they work. Can check out the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5C-RM4fh5Xg After we created a list of objects on our recording sheets that we would fish for to see if it attracted or did not attract to the magnet. The boys really enjoyed fishing to test the variety of objects that were in the pond. |
