How can I develop my resiliency to grow, learn and contribute to a community?
Today as a whole school we celebrated Pink Shirt Day. Some of the students knew what the day meant because they participated in it last year. We watched a video that explained the story of where and why Pink shirt day originated. Can check out the video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gjmf3I1_ZhU We talked about what bullying means and ways we could help stop bullying in our school community. The boys than did a great job showing that on pink shirts that will be displayed for the whole school to see. Art We had a special guest who is Ryder one of our Ed Assistants come and teach the boys how to do art with charcoal. She is an art teacher when she is not at school with our boys and was sharing her expertise as a real life artist! She started by showing the boys how to different shades of lines by either pressing hard or lightly, than we practiced rubbing the charcoal on the side. Once boys were comfortable with the feel of it we started to draw trees which reflects our resiliency theme. We started with the roots and the trunk. Next time we will begin to add the leaves and shading to bring our art to life. These pieces will be displayed on the Story Telling night! Tomorrow is Repsol. Boys will be swimming so they need to bring their gear please! Next tuesday March 7th the boys will be taking a half day trip to the Sports Hall of Fame organized by Mr.Vanderlinden. Please return forms as soon as possible and no later than Friday March 2nd. If you would like to volunteer for the trip and have security clearance please email Mrs.Chilton and an additional form will be sent home. Math We talked about what a number line is and how it is a math tool that can help us count, add and subtract. We looked at 2 different numbers line and talked about what we noticed. We noticed than the numbers get bigger as you go right and smaller as you go left. We will continue talking and practicing this strategy this week. Storytelling
We got into our multi aged groups for the first time and practiced presenting our stories to our group. The boys did a great job for their first attempt and we will continue to do this daily until the big performance night. Science To prepare for our Arctic research we practiced logging on to the laptops and than going to a website. The website is: http://www.alaskakids.org/index.cfm This is one of the several websites we will be using to find information about our Arctic Animals. We also created criteria for finding all of the information we will need for our investigation using a target rubric. The boys will practice using it in order to help guide them in their research and self assess as they go. We continue to add to the target as well as we go through so the boys have a clear understanding of what the learning goal is. We shared our buffalo building experience with the school. We talked about the reasons why we build the buffalo and than shared pictures about the process. Some of the boys also shared about their experience building the buffalo including the challenges we faced. The over arching message of our experience is that we overcame many challenges but that we kept going and never gave up.
Assembly We had an assembly with everyone in the whole school with Jeff Stockton. This was to organize students into teams for storytelling and also talk about the performance night and how it would run. Each student got assigned a team and than each team needed to decide a couple things. This included the order of who would perform their stories, who would be the groups hosts for the evening and a team name. We will begin to practice in our teams so we are ready for the big storytelling night! Math We looked at a problem in Math today and quickly realized that there was missing information in it. We figured out that we needed to know how many birds there were on the fence and than how many flew away. In our visual journal we drew a fence and than decided how many birds were on our fence. Than we put an x across the birds that flew away. To show what happened we wrote a number sentence in 2 different ways. One straight across and one with the numbers stacked. Science
We were excited to finally go outside for recess and enjoy the fresh air and sunshine!
Math In Math we continued to practice subtraction by using small cups to practice. We also talked about the different words for subtraction such as take away and minus. Also the symbol that shows it and how to write subtraction number sentences in straight across way and with the numbers stacked on top of eachother. We also did a math quiz with Ms.Jacobi to show what we know in Math. Storytelling We had another session with Jeff Stockton. We are starting to practice squeezing our stories into our fingers by looking at our storyboards. We also did a fun activity where boys pretended to throw a ball using only actions to show it and no words. First Jeff modeled it for us with a volunteer, than the class split into pairs to do it. Hope everyone is staying warm out there!
We have officially booked our Grade Two Field Trip this year!! We will be going to Heritage Park on Monday March 19th. We will need at least 3 volunteers to attend for the full day. Please ensure you have your security check. There is no limit for volunteers as well so if we have more than 3 than great! The boys will be participating in 2 different programs (one in morning/one in afternoon) that Heritage Park offers to enrich their knowledge of the past and experience it for themselves! Please email me to let me know if you would like to volunteer or if you have any questions. Field trip forms will be sent out closer to date and need to be returned shortly after. Science
We talked about what an Insulator is. An insulator keeps things either hot or cold. As Scientists we investigated different materials to see which one worked the best to keep snow cold. We tested 4 different materials and found out that tin foil and woven fabric worked well to keep the snow from melting for 15 minutes. The green cloth was not very effective and the snow melted quit a bit! The bubble wrap also did not keep the snow from melting. We will continue to talk about this concept next week and this will connect to our Arctic Animal Inquiry! Gym The boys got to try 3 different olympic sports in gym (elementary versions with safety in mind). Centers included ski jumping, biathlon and curling. Math We reviewed how to use our number sense of doubles to add other numbers to them using mini stacking cups. Tomorrow we will review how to perform simple calculations the same way using subtraction. Kindness This morning we talked about friendships and how we could be a good friend. We also watched a video about how kindness can color our world and talked about what kindness means. Tomorrow our focus will continue be on kindness, love and friendship and how little acts of kindness everyday can make a big impact! Apologies parents about not posting this yesturday! Weebly was down for maintenance.
For Valentines Day tomorrow I have talked to the boys about ensuring that if they are going to bring some that they bring enough for every single student which is 16 kids in the class. I will also be sending a list of first names with kids home if they have not made theirs yet or who would like to write names. An alternative option to save time is to just have your kid write their name on it only to hand out. If students do not have valentines and would like some than we will be doing a whole class activity so they have something to give or I can provide them paper/time to make their own tomorrow morning while we decorate our bags to put them in. Please let me know if you have any further questions in regards to tomorrow. Friendly reminder there is no school Thursday, Friday and Monday (family day) so enjoy the long weekend!! See you back on February 20th. Math We started to practice how to add doubles plus 1 and doubles take away 1. First, Mrs.Chilton demonstrated on the SmartBoard than kids showed their own example in our visual journal. We will begin to practice simple subtraction while continuing to practice addition using a variety of strategies. We will be exploring different strategies in order to discover which strategy works best for us. We will also be practicing basic facts and looking at fact families to help us add and subtract. Science
We had a discussion about what kind of animals live in the Arctic. Than we watched a video about 10 different animals that live in the Arctic. Check it out in the link below: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DXxzjmCFwTI After, we picked one of the animals that we will be investigating as a scientist to see how they survive in the cold Arctic. Some of the popular picks were Orcas, Polar Bears, and Narwhals! |
