Storyboards
We worked on our storyboards by looking at another example of a storyboard from the movie Finding Nemo. We created success criteria of the key things that we needed to ensure we had for our storyboards with the goal of clearly expressing our ideas. Success criteria included: -having all the important parts of the story in pictures -drawing the characters to show feelings using facial expressions and colors -drawing the background to show where the story takes place including the season (winter, summer, day time, night time, etc.) Next week we will share the awesome storyboards the boys created with Jeff Stockton and begin to practice orally telling their choose stories. Math We estimated how many markers were in the estimation jar. We had 5 people come very close with a good guess of 20. The actual count was 19 which we figured out by making groups of 2. We talked about how looking at the size of the object would help the boys make a good estimate. The smaller the object the more there will be and the larger the object the less there will be. Looking forward to what will be in the jar next week! This morning we looked at how they created the movie Finding Nemo using pictures. We used this an an exemplar to continue working on our own storyboards and how we could enhance them. We talked about how the illustrator clearly shows the characters feelings by drawing them with different expressions and sometimes using color to give the scene a particular mood such as blue for sad. The boys did a great job going back through their storyboards.
We officially began our inquiry into the Arctic. First we started with a lively discussion about who would win if it was Polar Bear versus Grizzly Bear because in the warm months they sometimes run into eachother. Students choose their animal than had to talk in their group to come up with 3 different reasons why they thought their bear would win. Than we looked at a book with visual information to see what the differences were. In the end it was decided that sometimes the Grizzly wins and sometimes the Polar Bear does. Next we looked at google maps and went north to see what Iqaluit, Nunavut was like. We did a great job generating a bunch of I wonder questions! This will also connect very closely with our ongoing Science investigation of Hot and Cold including animal adaptations such as Polar Bears black skin and translucent fur.
Skating was enjoyed by all. BIG THANK YOU to parent volunteers who came and were able to assist the boys with gearing up and down. Tomorrow we will hopefully go again if it the temperature does not drop past -20. Parents:
We continued to explore hot and cold by looking at how temperature works and making predictions for what would happen to the temperature in cold snow and hot water. Students practiced being scientist by making a prediction and looking at the temperature of the thermometers to start. We than placed the thermometers in at the same time and timed it for 5 minutes. We discovered and recorded that the hot water made the thermometer go up and that the cold water made it go down. We also practiced showing this on a thermometer and talked about plus and minus temperatures. The boys had some great connections and ideas around why these changes happened. We went to Mr.Fongs class. The Grade 5's showed us how to make a story board using pictures with no words! They taught us to only draw the important parts of the story. Than we partnered with the Grade 5's to start working on our drawings and they helped us. Everyone picked a story they want to tell and we are really excited to work on them next week and finish our story boards.
We had a session with Breanna the Occupational Therapist. She talked about the wise owl and dog in our brain and how we need to control the dog so the wise owl doesn't fly away. The boys were awesome at remembering the different strategies she's taught us so far to help us calm down. She taught us how muscles sometimes feel stiff uncooked spaghetti like when we are red zone and than how they feel relaxed and like cooked spaghetti when we are calm. We practiced tightening different parts of our body than slowly relaxing them by listening to a calming sound. This will be a great strategy we will add to our tool box to help us stay in the green zone.
Reminder next week skating starts. Please make sure boys come dressed for the weather and let us know if they need skates (unless you have already sent back the form). |
