Story Telling
Mrs.Chilton told another story today. This one was called "The Day the Buffalo Came". It was about a chief called Mountain Man and his son Little Mountain who kept all the buffalos to themselves and would not share. Coyote the trickster made a plan to change into a bird who had a broken wing to try and trick them into letting him into the house. This plan didn't work and he tried changing into a dog instead. This worked and Little Mountain brought him into the house and than Mountain Man said to put him outside with the buffalo. Coyote started barking which the buffalo had never heard so they stampeded out and went all over the earth. From that day on the people had buffalo. Once we heard the story we drew what happened in the story and talked about the setting and characters. Than we practiced writing a sentence about one part of the story. Tomorrow we will hear the final third story than students will pick which one they want to tell. Science We read the book "The Mitten" by Jan Brett. Than we did an experiment where we looked at the temperature on the thermometer before and made a prediction about what would happen when we put it inside our mitts for 1 minute. Most predicted that the temperature would change. Some kids said up and some said down. We discovered that the temperature went up in most mitts. One mitt it went down though! Tomorrow is Repsol. It is the boys turn for dryland so they do not need their swim stuff. Math We showed different ways to make the magic number ten in our visual journal! Some of the different ways we can do are: 8+2=10 100-90=10 20-10=10 5+5=10 6+4=10 14-5=10 We also drew pictures to show 10 using stick people and boomerangs. One of our fellow students also showed us how a number line worked which is a strategy we will be exploring more to help us add. Journal We talked about the steps you take when you brush your teeth and acted it out. Than we talked about the steps you take to get ready to play in the snow. We drew a picture and wrote a sentence for each step for first, next, than last. This will help us to understand how stories are sequenced so we can start working on our story boards soon!
Parents please see information about skating which should be in students backpacks. Forms need to be filled out and returned as soon as possible. You can keep the schedule and information for future reference. If you are interested in volunteering please let me know and I will get you the volunteer form. THANKS!
Math We practiced adding dominoes on the smartboard by looking at the dots, counting them than dragging that number down to form a number sentence. Literacy We are continuing to learn different parts of stories and how they are made. Today we watched a video about plot. Plot means a problem in a story along with events that lead to a solution. In our journal we showed a problem by using pictures and words to start. Our next step is to add some events. Finally we will talk about solutions. We will also be discussing organizing stories by beginning, middle and end. Over the next couple of days we will spending time with Jeff Stockton again to continue on our story telling journey with him We started to paper mache our Buffalo. This was a challenge because when we first started we had to put the legs back on and he kept tipping over! We got them to finally stand up straight though and worked in small groups to take turns using the paper mache to make it more stable. We are hoping this will add weight to the legs so they wont move as much anymore!
When we were not helping paper mache boys also had alot of fun making paper airplanes out of big pieces of paper and flying them around the library! Math Today in Math we counted Q tips in our estimation station jar. Each table group was given a pile of them and students put them into groups of 10 than we lined them up at the front of the room. We counted by 10's till we got to 100 than started again. We made a second group of 100 than realized we had some leftover so we counted those by 1. Our final count was 210 and 3 people in the class guess very close so we had to rock paper scissors to see who got to take the jar home next. Everyone in the class though will get a turn! Science We generated questions about Hot and Cold. Than we did an experiment called Fooling Your Senses. We had 3 buckets of different temperature water (cold, warm and hot). First we wrote down a hypothesis in our visual journal to predict what we thought would happen. Than students took turns putting a hand in both cold and hot water at the same time and counting to 10 slowly. When done counting, students put both hands at the same time in the warm water in the middle. Our discovery was that the cold hand started to feel warm and the hot hand started to feel cold.
Literacy We have been talking about what a character is and brainstorming ideas for characters. We looked at different ways to organize our ideas about characters such as a web, list and drawing/labelling. Today we talked about adding details about that character in order to clearly describe them. Our next step is to look at what a setting is and continue brainstorming ideas. This will connect really well with our story telling residency that will continue next week! Science We read a great picture book called Ada Twist Scientist. It is about a little girl who doesn't talk at first and her parents worry. Than all of a sudden she climbs to the top of a clock and starts to ask all sorts of questions. We talked about how scientists ask questions. Next we looked at different pictures and sorted them into hot or cold. Through a discussion we realized that some things could be both such as water can be both a cold and hot temperatures. Tomorrow we will start to brainstorm questions about hot and cold to begin our Science inquiry! Today we said good bye to our Educational Assistant Ms.Jenn who has received a new job within the CBE. She will be greatly missed but we were glad to have her for the time we did because she taught us alot!
Today we met Jeff Stockton. He will be working with the Grade Two students on the art of story telling. For our first session he began by telling us a very exciting story about Little Tom and his family who took on a very hungry Snow Dragon! The boys loved the way Jeff told the story by combining words and harp playing. He talked to the boys about how they were going to use their imaginations to imagine the story like pictures in their head or a movie. For our next session Jeff asked that the boys draw a part of the story which the boys had no problem doing after we returned to the classroom!
Some of the highlights of the story were:

Report Cards are coming home today.
Please keep the report card and any other information inside envelope. Please return the empty envelope signed on the front to Mrs.Chilton by Wednesday January 17th next week. Have a good weekend!!! |
