How can I develop my resiliency to grow, learn and contribute to a community?
We have been reading a picture book called Where the Buffaloes Began. Our goal is the understand First Nations culture and beliefs by reading stories that have been passed down from generation to generation.
What has happened so far in the story as described by the boys: The legend goes that the buffaloes come from the lake to the south. An Elder in the community told Little Wolf the story. Little Wolf kept thinking about if the legend was true so he decided to see if it was true. He went to the lake on his pony. He had to wait for 2 whole days patiently which shows he is resilient. All of a sudden, the buffalo started to come out of the lake because he started to raise his hands and make noise. The enemy tribe is coming to attack Little Wolf's community but he does not know this. We can't wait to find out! We watched Charlie Brown and Linus explained what remembrance day means.
We listened to the poem In Flanders Field be read aloud by different children and highlighted the rhyming words in the poem. To connect to our work on Zones of Regulation we drew a picture in our visual journal to show how the poem made us feel. Most people showed Blue zone sad. Quotes from the Boys when reflecting: "We will always remember the soldiers on remembrance day because they fought in the war." "Remembrance day is all about showing love and saying thank you to the soldiers. " We wrote postcards to veterans to show our appreciation of their service.
REMINDER: NO SCHOOL TOMORROW! Enjoy your long weekend!
We worked together as a team to present our learning so far to the whole school. Some people helped go get the other the classes to come to the assembly. First we had someone acknowledge the land and two people held the poster. Three people shared one word to describe what they need to grow and be successful. The words were working hard and having fun, water and food. Our presentation was all about the hugging tree and what we need to grow. It was also about making our time capsule and burying it. Our next step was to investigate artifacts from the past which we showed with pictures. Overall it was a proud moment for all of us! Today we guessed (made an estimate) about how tall (height) the buffalo is. We brainstormed non standard measurement units we could use like bodies, pencils, car, blocks and journals. After some talking though we decided the best way would be to use string! Everyone got to make a guess for how tall. Our next step make a guess for how long (length) the buffalo is. Than we are going to measure Mrs.Chilton's car tomorrow to see how big it really is!
