How can I develop my resiliency to grow, learn and contribute to a community?
Drawing & Surveys in Math (Parents check backpacks for information sheet from Parent Council)5/15/2018
We started to practice drawing a Praying Mantis. The boys could either follow along with the step by step video or use a printed picture to create their own. We have been reading the popular series of books called Diary of a ______ (worm, spider, fly) by Doreen Cronin. There is no Diary of a Praying Mantis so as a class we will be creating a story of our own. We started this morning by jotting down some initial ideas in our black writing journals. Math
Today we looked at what a Pictograph is and reviewed what is survey is how to collect data. The boys went around the school to finish collecting data for the survey they created yesturday. Our next step will to create a graph to show their data. This morning we talked about our learning goal and success criteria for our Science investigation on Praying Mantis. We came up with 4 categories of information we would be looking for. We than added headings to our graphic organizer and logged on to the laptops to investigate. We looked at National Geographic for kids to find information. Can check it out here:
https://kids.nationalgeographic.com/animals/praying-mantis/#praying-mantis-eyes.jpg We started to find information about our Mantis friends and tomorrow will continue by looking at another website. Our goal is to learn enough so that we can create our own "Pokemon" card about these amazing insects! Mom's check you boys backpacks (if they forget to give their surprise that they made you this morning)! ; Have a fantastic weekend enjoying this spring weather!
This morning we used the textured painting we created yesturday and a variety of paper to create an Eric Carl inspired art project. We will be adding onto the board as we investigate bugs further. In math we started to practice subtraction using bugs. We also reviewed how to count by 2's, 5's and 10's with the bugs.
In the morning we read the story The Grouchy Lady Bug by the classic author Eric Carl. The boys loved how the lady bug kept challenging bigger and bigger things to fight but than suddenly changing his mind because they wernt big enough! After we talked about how Eric Carl creates the bugs and background in his books and how we were going to be creating our own Eric Carl inspired bugs for a collaborative art mural for our bulletin board. We started by painting giant pieces of paper in our table groups. Mrs.Chilton showed the boys how to use the primary colors to mix a variety of different secondary colors. We also used different things to create texture in the paint such as forks, spoons, and pieces of cardboard. Tomorrow we will be cutting the pieces up in order to make bugs for our mural. Math We watched a video that introduced us to what a survery and tally chart is. It ran through the steps on how to collect data and record it using tally marks. We than started to create our own survey about what our favorite bugs was on grid paper. Tomorrow we will finish the table and than start collecting the data. We are also beginning to practice and talk about subtraction when it comes to problem solving. Science We talked about what Entomology is (study of insects) and what Entomologist do. We watched a video about a day in the life of an Entomologist. The boys were provided an opportunity to be Entomologist by rotating through centers with real specimens and examining them using their magnifying tool. Tomorrow is our last session at Repsol. We will be swimming from 9-11 AM morning than returning to the school for a hot dog party and movie. Regular dismissal will happen as usual at 235. Praying Mantis & Bug Inquiry Begins! This morning we watched a video about what makes an insect an insect. In our desk groups we shared what we knew about bugs than everyone wrote on a sticky note something they wondered about bugs. We also watched several videos about the Praying Mantis and begun a web of information about them. We will be become experts on Mantis in order to create a custom "Pokebug" card about this fascinating insect. We continued to mist our egg case twice a day because they need a humid environment. For Math we also estimated how long/wide we think the Mantis will be and estimated how many we think will hatch from the egg case. Today we worked on showing our estimate in tally marks and counting by 5's and than grouping them by 10. Time Capsule Countdown Today we checked the time capsule and there are only 51 more days till we open it and as some boys pointed out till summer! yahoo! This morning we shared about the Arctic Winter Games and all the Science we have been over the past 2 months. The boys did a great job speaking in front of the whole school and also demonstrating the Arctic sport the kneel jump! We even convinced Mr.Stanley to try it as well (I think the Grade 2's made it look easy). We showed the school all the different kinds of sports and a the video we watched to start our inquiry.
Parents check backpacks for a couple of things that were sent home today. This morning we went to visit the Grade 3's to see their worms. The boys went with a buddy and than got to see a close up look at the worms and the dirt that they live in using magnifying glasses. This was a great chance for the Grade 2's to learn about the little decomposers in our world. Some of the highlights included seeing worms hatch out of eggs and learning interesting facts about them from the Grade 3's. We also got to see their duck eggs and ask questions about them. Today was testing day for our insulators! First we talked about partnering with a buddy to ask questions about their design and to make suggestions. We than went in buddies and talked about our design. After the boys were given time to make any final adjustments that they wanted before testing. We put the frozen fish inside our insulators with the goal of keeping it frozen for 10 hours! Most insulators kept the fish frozen for 2 hours, some 2 1/2 hours and some kept it cold for 4 hours! This morning the boys came back from gym to a BIG surprise! Mrs.Chilton had got a new class pet for the month of May. We will be putting on our scientist hats to investigate the life cycle of Praying Mantis. Right now the praying mantis are in an egg case that is hanging from the top of the cage. We will be watching with excitement everyday to see if they are hatching! Tomorrow we will make some predictions about what we will happen like how big they will be and how many will come out of the egg case which connect to measurement and estimation in Math! Today we spent some time sketching the egg case in our visual journals. In Science we used google to see how long the flight from Iqaluit Nunavut to Calgary would be. It is about a 10 hour flight. The boys were presented the challenge that they had caught fish in the Arctic and wanted to bring it all the way back to Calgary but to do that it needed to stay frozen. To keep it frozen they were given some materials to create an insulator for their frozen fish that we will test tomorrow.
Science
This morning we looked at how the Inuit hunt and added both the animals they hunt and what tools they use to our web. We went to visit the staff room to look at the fridge. We talked about what the fridge does (keep things cold and frozen). The boys were than shown some frozen fish from the freezer! This "fish" was caught in the Arctic and needs to be transported frozen all the way from Iqaluit Nunavut back to Calgary. We put one of the frozen fish in a plastic cup and predicted how long it would take to melt. It took 48 minutes for the ice to completely melt. Tomorrow the challenge will be to put on their engineer hats to design and build a better insulator using a variety of materials in order to keep the fish frozen! Music To end the year in celebration we will be learning an All Boys version of the popular song everything is awesome. We just looked at some of the lyrics today and listened to the instrumental song to get an idea of the beat. We will practicing this song over the next couple of weeks! The boys can practice at home if they want! Check out the lyrics and instrumental song below!
