How can I develop my resiliency to grow, learn and contribute to a community?
This morning we started off with a Science Riddle. The boys had some great guesses including some guessing it was magnets! We than looked at and discussed pictures of different trains. The boys had lots to share about their experiences riding trains or seeing the different kinds of trains. Afterwards we watched a video about MagLev trains to learn more about how they work using the power of magnets! They coolest fact we learned was that they can go up to 500 almost 600 Km/h!!!
In the afternoon we spent some time exploring our classroom with two different kinds of magnets. We used horsehoe and bar magnets to test objects all around the room. We watched another video that explained how magnets come from Iron that is around the core of the center of the earth. Also how the magnetic field protects earth from the sun's solar energy! We will continue exploring magnets through lots of experimentation this week! Daily 5 This week our word family we will be working on is th. This letter sound is in alot of words! We watched a video than brainstormed th words on the whiteboard. This morning we reviewed what a noun and verb was. We also talked about connecting words in complete ideas such as the, that, was, and etc. and than punctuation (.!?). The boys got a mixed bag of words and worked in pairs to sort the words into 4 categories. Once they sorted they built silly sentences out of them and wrote them in their writing journals. We will continue to practice these parts of speech in order to develop a solid understanding of how to write complete ideas that make sense! Creative Writing
We listened to a story called Not A Box by Antoinette Potis. Can check out the link here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nif94VQ4Xsc Afterwards we brainstormed ideas by walking around thinking silently in our heads of an idea when Mrs.Chilton said go. When Mrs.Chilton said stop the boys found a buddy to share their idea with. We did this two more times so the boys had several ideas for what the box could be! Afterwards the boys got started on drawing and writing what the box would be. They started with some pre-made pictures than created their own. The best part was there were so many different ideas such as rock ships, trees, a city, tow trucks, cars and a time machine! Math We talked about subtraction and how sometimes we don't have to regroup and other times we do if there is not enough to subtract from. We will begin the practice this using our tens and ones manipulatives to gain a better understanding of what it means to "borrow" a ten when we subtract. The boys have now gotten used to subtracting a single digit from a double digit. Our next step is to begin to subtract a double digit from a double digit. We will also continue to problem solve using both addition and subtraction during guided Math Centers. Science This afternoon we looked at the calendar to figure out how many days the Mantis had been in our classroom. We figure out it has already been 24 days! We did an observation in our visual journal by looking closely at the Mantis in clear plastic cups. We talked about how they are still in the Nymph stage of the life cycle. Some observations from the boys:
Spring is officially here! This morning we got to go visit with the Grade 3 ducks. The grade 3s shared with us about each little special duck including some of their adaptations such as their webbed feet and markings. We got to watch the swim around and eat some small pieces of broccoli. The grade 2's got to ask questions after.
We also worked on finishing our Diary of a Praying Mantis story. The boys have been going through the writing process and most of them are on the final stage of illustrating which we talked about today using the illustrator of the Diary series Harry Bliss as our exemplar. Once everyone has completed illustrating we will put it all together and design a front and back cover. We have been practicing subtraction and looking at Data. Today we looked at a tally chart and answered some questions based on what it showed. We also reviewed the symbols we use to compare numbers such as greater than, less than and equal too. Our next step will be to begin creating story problems that involve two digit addition and subtraction. We will also continue to look at different types of graphs such as a bar graph in order to practice interpreting data.
Yesturday we had our big Knights Bravery Race aka Spartan Race. The boys did an amazing job tearing around the course and tackling the obstacles. The boys were given time to do one lap however many of them did way more! Some choose to get super muddy while others choose a less muddy approach. Overall it was a proud moment for Mrs.Chilton to watch the boys participate and give it 110%! This morning we talked in small groups about what we had learned about bugs so far. The boys had alot of information to share such as the different body parts including what makes an insect an insect. They talked about life cycles and how there are many different kinds of insects such as bees who pollinate to help plants grow and how lady bugs have two sets of wings. We are using this information to create their own Pokemon cards powers. We are almost finished the cards and than next week we will battle them to practice addition and subtraction.
Our Knight Bravery Race will be happening tomorrow afternoon. Parents please ensure the boys have the following:
Today we created a life cycle of the Praying Mantis using clay. We looked at Grade 3's life cycle that they had already created for their ducks as an example. The boys got to take a closer look at the Nymphs that have hatched. This morning Mrs.Chilton revealed that over the weekend the Praying Mantis had hatched! We guessed that there are about 100 or maybe inside the enclosure. Boys got a chance to have a look up close using magnifying glasses. We continued writing our diary of a mantis story. We are finishing our rough drafts
This afternoon we met Anshul Fernando who has been collecting and studying bugs since he was a kid. He has lived in Australia, Sri Lanka and many other places but now he resides in Calgary going around to schools teaching kids about his bugs! He has almost half a million bugs in his collection. Today he brought 2 scorpions to show the boys which he has been trained specifically to handle safely and told the boys to not try it on their own! He also showed us what the scorpion looks like under black light because that's how he find them at night because they are nocturnal! Today we learned alot about the difference between Arachnids, Insects and Anthropods. Anshul shared facts with the boys through story telling and answering alot of great questions the boys had. He also prompted them with questions to get them thinking about all the differences such as how is a butterfly different than a moth? If you want to check out more of Anshul's work here is a link to his youtube channel: *disclaimer parents there is a video of a tarantula eating a mouse which is the only video he said might not be appropriate for kids otherwise his videos are very kid friendly! https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCIM55gY_PBzg87GuyYnBKow We went outside yesturday to look around our own school yard for small crawling creatures. We saw:
